[edit] Origin and distribution
Relatively few people possess the surname. In Italy, it occurs mostly in the areas between Turin and Milan, though higher concentrations in Perugia suggest Umbrian origins.[1] Branches of the Piccio family can also be found in Argentina, Chile, France, the Philippines, Switzerland, and the United States.
[edit] Occurence within the Jewish community
The surname also occurs within the Jewish community of Rome[2] and had been noted as one of the most frequently occuring in legal documents between the 16th and 19th centuries.[3] It is uncertain, however, whether the Jewish and non-Jewish surname holders are one clan or if the former acquired the surname independently.
