Phylogenesis (1999) is a science fiction novel written by Alan Dean Foster. The full title is sometime shown as Phylogenesis: Book One of The Founding of the Commonwealth.
Foster formally establishes the beginnings of the Humanx Commonwealth in this novel. First contact had already been established in the novel Nor Crystal Tears and here the story of the beginnings of the complex entity that is the Commonwealth is fleshed out, but not by obvious means of following space explorers, scientists and politicians. Instead Foster creates two new characters, the Thranx Desvendapur, a poet who seeks to find new inspiration for his work by working his way into the Thranx base that has been established in the Amazon rain forest, and a human thief, Cheelo Montoya, who helps Des when the insectoid-alien slips out of the base to see humanity up close and personal. The mismatched pair flee from the authorities, a common Foster motif, and demonstrate how the two races can easily work together, especially in the face of their common enemy, the AAnn.
