Uh, something is pretty wack with this guy. I posted a useful and relevent sentence on the feces page and he deleted it. Those of you willing to check the page history can see it is hardly "vandalism" in his words.

[edit] Speak your mind

[edit] Partially reverted change in One Time Pad article

Phr, I partially reverted your change of 18 July 2006 in the One Time Pad article. You had removed some external links at the end, some on the grounds that they were dead links, and some on the grounds that they linked to "bogus implementations". I checked which links were still dead, and didn't restore those. Only one link remained, to an implementation that I have no reason to believe is bogus, so I restored the link. (I forgot to sign in, so the change shows up as from IP address 67.120.84.254). If you think the implementation linked to is bogus, please state why. Thanks. Kfogel

[edit] Need help on using the Fair Use tag

As indicated by you in my talk page, i inserted a

Copyrighted

This work is copyrighted and unlicensed. It does not fall into one of the blanket fair use categories listed at Wikipedia:Fair use#Images or Wikipedia:Fair use#Audio_clips. However, it is believed that the use of this work in the article "Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Jayram_Menon":

  • To illustrate the object in question
  • Where no free equivalent is available or could be created that would adequately give the same information
  • On the English-language Wikipedia ([1]), hosted on servers in the United States by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation ([2]),

qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Any other uses of this image, on Wikipedia or elsewhere, may be copyright infringement. See Wikipedia:Fair use and Wikipedia:Copyrights.

To the uploader: this tag is not a sufficient claim of fair use. You must also include the source of the work, all available copyright information, and a detailed fair use rationale.

I still keep getting some "Warning" regarding copyright stuff. This image [[3]] is a scan image of a newspaper ? SO what must the appropriate fair use tag read ?? This image is for the review of Admins...Greatly appreciate your assistance in this regard. AshleyMiller 15:47, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Michael Spivak tiny.png

Thanks for uploading Image:Michael Spivak tiny.png. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 16:06, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

"No consensus" is between keep and delete. Merge is a keep !vote anyway. Merge doesn't need AfD - editors can do it. It was a poor time to nominate it, as things are still uncertain. I made it quite clear the keep was without prejudice to future nominations, so I really don't see why you think there is any problem with that. Tyrenius 00:14, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

See "keep" notice: "The result of the discussion was Keep but without prejudice to merge or future renomination some time after the competition ends." Should it subsequently be renominated after the competition results, then the earlier keep will not be the significant factor that it normally would be. Tyrenius 03:30, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Schwarz AfD

Whoops. Didn't check the talk page. I was mainly trying to clean out the AFD/Today page, which suddenly had an old discussion (slightly shorter that War and Peace) dumped into it. So I just assumed this was the second nomination. I'll make a point of checking that in the future. Fan-1967 03:34, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Abu Badali

I have no issue if you ask the candidate on his talk page. But asking personal questions ("have you read this book") should stay off the main RFA page. Asking the candidate questions about whether he/she understands copyright policy are one thing, promoting a particular book is another. (Off-topic: I own the book, and it's good, but having read it has little to do with a user's RFA.) Ral315 (talk) 03:07, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] More Kosovo weirdness

We've had some disruption on Kosovo, Kosovo Liberation Army and Template:Kosovo-InfoBox from an anonymous user who's been using multiple proxy servers to make highly contentious edits and personal attacks against me. It would appear that the person responsible is the operator of the Tonycdp account. I'd be grateful if you could check my reasoning on User talk:ChrisO/Tonycdp and let me know what you think. If I'm right, the user in question has clearly been acting dishonestly and disruptively; the question is, what should we do about it? -- ChrisO 18:58, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Don't worry, it's been dealt with now. :-)

Thanks for offering to note the other problem on the Ferick RfC; I'd be grateful if you could go ahead as you suggested. -- ChrisO 18:50, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: semiprotection

Thanks. Your assumption re identity is correct. Billbrock 02:52, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your message

Hello :-) Thanks for catching my mistake. I semi-protected the article. We may need to go to full protection because sometimes Amorrow has several sleeper accounts ready and waiting. I think I found one already. --FloNight talk 03:46, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Actually

It doesn't matter. Still shouldn't be listed anywhere, voluntarily or not. But you know, if the Oversight committee disagrees, they will revert me I'm sure. I emailed them on it. --Woohookitty(meow) 06:08, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

But yes, I agree. It was probably him. --Woohookitty(meow) 06:10, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Oh hey there!

How are you going? Just out of curiosity, would you like to guess what I stuck up my butt today? 172.128.240.56 16:16, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Come on, don't be shy! Would you like a hint?  ; ) 172.144.178.180 18:56, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
I won't make fun of you if you get it wrong! Come on, take a guess, it's a fun game!  : ) 172.136.90.110 23:45, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
OK, so now I've got ANOTHER item up my butt, and you have to guess BOTH! If you can get one answer right within five guesses, you get a point. Want to play? 172.132.45.66 13:36, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A Question, if you will please

May I ask, Phr, what is the motivation? It is not just you, but several editors who perform a similar action. I don't understand it and since you are the most recent editor who did, who might respond honestly (User:Fahrenheit451 won't respond at all), I am asking you. I once had an arbitration. I am constrained from editing Scientology articles. Yet it seems, almost anywhere I post, an editor comes along and mentions my past arbitration. It has never, in any instance had any application to the discussion going on. I ask because of your recent post editing difference. My question is, "Of what relevence is the mention of my months ago arbitration to what is being discussed?" Or, if you prefer, "why do you mention it?" Terryeo 15:41, 19 August 2006 (UTC) Thanks for saying. Terryeo 08:02, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Google ranking

My understanding from the recurring discussions on Wikipedia is that links on Talk pages and User pages don't get followed by robots and so don't count towards Google rank or other ratings. It's hard to tell looking at our website logs because the proportion of Wikipedia hits is so small. I wondered if you had a reference for your concern about this subject. Stephen B Streater 23:10, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Video formats

It is now rare to originate video in an open format. Camera outputs such as DV, Digibeta, MPEG2 and MPEG4 are all proprietary. So Wikipedia's video policy can (in practice) only extend to the format the video is stored in on its servers - video has to be converted at some stage. So the maximum a solution for Wikipedia needs is conversion into a free format at the publishing stage. Although, as it happens, FORscene could extend much further. What do you think? Stephen B Streater 07:11, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] One step at a time

I appreciate that you have a plausible viewpoint. This is why I linked to the videos in the answers to the questions. So it is no coincidence that this issue has arisen in my RfA. You will also notice that the Video policy page on Meta has also had some video links for months. This is not some secret plot to subvert foundation issues. Like RfA, it is no big deal. It is a good way of teasing out requirements.

The process is to find the constraints first, and then fit the solution to these. I know people often start with the solution and then tell people the constraints, but this is not as productive. Anyway, the next step I'd like you to take is to acknowledge that "Free on Wikipedia" does not mean restricted everyone/anywhere else. You have stated in my RfA that you think that Free on Wikipedia is inconsistent with foundation issues, and this risks triggering a splurge of me-toos from people who will not take as much care as you. As you will be away for a period, I'd appreciate a resolution of this before you go away. Stephen B Streater 09:42, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Too late! I hope your holiday went well nevertheless. Stephen B Streater 23:01, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
