Phoenix, or Giruad, is a fictional character in Marvel Comics's Guardians of the Galaxy comic series. He first appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy # 11. His adventures are set in the 30th century.
[edit] History
Giruad is a human inhabitant of the planet of New Haven, a world colonized by mutants that is doomed by an instability in its core. After Starhawk and his fellow Guardians of the Galaxy arrive on New Haven to rescue its people, Starhawk offers Giruad a way to save his people: Become host to the Phoenix Force. As Phoenix, Giruad consumes the planet but uses the absorbed energy to teleport his people to safety.
Mainframe, the future version of Vision, tells Giruad that he is "the ninth sentient being since Jean Grey to host the Phoenix Force". Giraud is a powerful addition to the team, fighting off reality-warping witches, alien warlords, and cosmic sorcerers, and even powering the life support system of an artificial planet; however, a deadly psychic virus nearly drives him insane, and he destroys several lifeless planets before the Phoenix Force helps him heal himself.
[edit] Powers
Giraud is a non-powered human that bonds with the Phoenix Force. After he becomes host to the Phoenix, he is imbued with the power of telekinesis, an ability he can use to move, lift, and manipulate most forms of matter with his thoughts. By focusing his mental energy into a tight beam, Giraud can fire flaming psychic force blasts. He can fly at high-speeds. By utilizing the Phoenix Force, Giraud can absorb virtually any form of energy to increase these abilities. He can also use the Phoenix Force to teleport vast amounts of matter over immense distances by converting the matter into energy and then turning it back into matter at a desired location. The Phoenix Force allows Giraud to fly through the vacuum of space without harm and to heal himself almost instantly if damaged. When Giraud uses his powers, he is surrounded by an aura of psionic fire that takes the shape of a bird.
