Phloroglucinol or benzene-1,3,5-triol is a process chemical widely used in the industrial synthesis of pharmaceuticals and high-energy chemicals (explosives). It is synthesized on the very large scale using the following process:

Recently, several engineered biosyntheses for this product has been reported, although their yields are very low.

Used as decalcifier of bone specimens in microscopy.
