Philip Schonewille learnt his trade in Holland where his family is heavilly steeped in Dutch tradition, however he was actually born and raised in the heart of St Helens, Merseyside where he has turned full circle and now resides there. He spent six years in the Netherlands from 1995 to 2001 His career kicked off in earnest after earning a degree in Systems design at the University of Amsterdam. He was asked by John de Mol to join Big Brother studios in Amsterdam as a set designer, as part of an apprenteship with a training employment scheme. Schonewille played a minor role, but learnt a great deal of experience and at the age of 19, flew back to St Helens to be with his immediate family. He spent the next fifteen months as a manager of information systems at H. J. Heinz Company. Schonewille's talents were wasted however, and his ambitions lay in the creative field. After a year of training in the field of 'Advertisment and promotions' at Leigh, Schonewille voluntarilly joined the St Helens based Support Local Trade group after being invited by it's then leader Adam hayes to promote their name. For Schonewille it was the ideal role to expose his talents. He not only advertised his work, but became graphic designer and website designer and also attended key speeches as a member of comittee, without actually speaking himself. Schonewille left however, a few months before the group folded in the Winter of 2005. Schonewille said he was 'disillusioned' with the way things were going and parted company, which proved a huge blow to leader Leon armstrong.
At the age of 23, Schonewille had a lot of training under his belt, but little in the way of employment. With a good reputation behind him though, Pimbletts shown their interest by offering Schonewille the job of revamping the store. With Interior design and marketing skills under his belt, and on the back of recent success, Schonewille found the offer too tempting and joined the richly renowned bakers. Schonewille's impact was immediate, he single handedly changed the face of Pimbletts with a look that appealed to both young and old, and sales were boosted signifcantly. However, it was his intervention with the Pimbletts recipe that to this day has become a source of debate around the town. Schonewille brought in experts in the field of savoury goods, and after months of taste testing, Schonewille believed they had an even greater product on their hands. The new recipe did not go down well with townsfolk however, and was greeted with anger, many choosing to complain to the local press. It was not only the recipe though, the prices also went up, while Schonewille's reputation plummited.
One letter in the St Helens Star read "Mr Schonewille, what makes you think you can come along and destroy over a hundred years of tradition. Your job was to revamp the image of the store, instead you have ruined one of St Helens finest products."
In response Schonewille defends the product saying "The new pies have been tested rigorously and we believe when the fuss has died down, our range will be as popular as ever. The pies are an acquired taste, the people of St Helens have always stressed this to outsiders and we will stress this to the people of St Helens about the new range. Sales are still very healthy and indeed show profit on last years."
Pimbletts have also made a statement, defending Schonewille. "We are very happy with the work Philip has done and we have no intention of replacing him."
On December 1st 2005, Schonewille gave in to the intense pressure from the public to resign and embarked on a career in the advertising industry with MediaVest Manchester. Schonewille's creative ideas should be ideal in his latest venture and it is expected that he will become a house-hold name with some eye catching adverts heading our way.
