The Republic of the Philippines (Filipino: Republika ng Pilipinas), or the Philippines (Filipino: Pilipinas), also known as "the Pearl of the Orient Seas", is a nation located in southeast Asia. It lies 1,210 km (750 mi) away from mainland Asia and consists of 7,107 islands that form the Philippine Archipelago. It is also part of the Malay Archipelago.

The country's name originated with Ruy López de Villalobos naming both the islands of Samar and Leyte, Las Islas Felipinas after King Philip II of Spain during his failed expedition in 1543. The archipelago was known under various names such as New Castille (Nueva Castilla), Western Islands (Islas del Poniente), the Manilas, the St. Lazarus Islands (Islas de San Lázaro) and others. Ultimately, Filipinas came to refer to the entire archipelago.

MRT Train approaching Ayala Avenue Station

The Manila Metro Rail Transit System, more popularly known as the MRT, is part of the main metropolitan rail system serving the Metro Manila area in the Philippines. Only one line exists within this network, and that is MRT-3, called the Blue Line. It is also popularly known as the Metrostar Express or Metrostar for short. Although the network has characteristics of light rail, such as the type of rolling stock used, the system is more akin to a rapid transit system. The system is not related to the Manila Light Rail Transit System, which forms a completely different but linked system. Although one of the original purposes of the system was to decongest Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), one of Metro Manila's main thoroughfares, many commuters who ride the MRT also take various forms of road-based public transport, such as buses, to reach the intended destination from an MRT station. While this forms a comprehensive transportation system serving many parts of Metro Manila, the system has only been partially successful in decongesting the very busy thoroughfare, which is further aggravated by the rising number of motor vehicles in the metropolis. The system is operated by the Metro Rail Transit Corporation, a private company operating in partnership with the Department of Transportation and Communications under a Build-Operate-Transfer agreement.

Epifanio de los Santos Avenue, abbreviated EDSA, is the main highway in Metro Manila, Philippines. It is an important commuting hub between the northern and southern parts of the metropolis. EDSA is a partially controlled access, 10-lane divided highway (expressway) with many interchanges along its length that eliminate the need for traffic lights, but with a few traffic lights where there is insufficient space or funds for a complete interchange. EDSA typically handles around 225,000 cars every day, typical of major freeways in other large cities.
