Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (also referred to as "Philly," the "the City of Brotherly Love," and "the Quaker City") is the fifth most populous city in the United States and the largest in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, both in area and population. Since 1854, the city has been coterminous with Philadelphia County. Philadelphia has the third largest downtown residential population in the U.S., behind New York and Chicago. The Philadelphia metropolitan area is the fourth largest in the U.S. by the current official definition, with some 5.7 million people, though other definitions place it sixth behind the San Francisco Bay Area and Washington-Baltimore. Philadelphia is the central city of the Delaware Valley metropolitan area.

The City is one of the oldest and most historically significant in the U.S. During part of the 18th century, the city was the first capital and most populous city of the United States. At that time, it eclipsed Boston and New York City in political and social importance, with Benjamin Franklin playing an extraordinary role in Philadelphia's rise.

The Philadelphia Naval Shipyard was the first naval shipyard of the United States. The yard was established in 1801, and the League Island site was built in 1917. The naval yard's greatest period came in World War II, when the yard employed 40,000 people on the construction of 53 ships and the repair of 574. It officially closed 30 September 1995, although various projects were still underway in 2003 under new ownership. The image was taken on May 19, 1955.

Map of Philadelphia County with Northeast Highlighted.

Northeast Philadelphia is a section of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. According to the 2000 Census, the Northeast has a sizable percentage of the city's 1.5 million people — a population of between 300,000 and 450,000, depending on how the area is defined. Beginning in the 1980's, many of the Northeast's middle class children graduated college and settled in suburbs, especially nearby Bucks County. With this emigration of older populations, a new influx of Latinos have settled along the southern edges of the Northeast, while African Americans and Asian immigrants have purchased homes in this once almost exclusively white area of the city. The neighborhoods that make up Northeast Philadelphia include Fox Chase, Lawncrest, Rhawnhurst, Tacony, Frankford, Mayfair, Bustleton, Torresdale, Parkwood, Somerton, Burholme, Ryers, Holmesburg, and Crestmont Farms. It is sometimes said to include the neighborhoods of Bridesburg, Port Richmond, and Fishtown, as well.

"Philadelphia is a city to be happy in...Everything is well conditioned and cared for. If any fault could be found it would be that of too much regularity and too nice precision."
