Phione (フィオネ Fione?) is one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. The purpose of Phione in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[1]
Phione's name may be derived from the word phony, meaning fake, due to Phione possibly being seen as a fake Manaphy. Phione's name might also be a reference to the Pokémon Ranger region Fiore where, through a special event in Japan, Manaphy's egg can be obtained and transferred to Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

[edit] In the video games

Although Phione can be created by breeding Manaphy and Ditto, Phione will not evolve into Manaphy. This would mean that Phione is the only Pokémon that cannot evolve into the Pokémon from which it is bred[2]. Phione itself can breed with Ditto, but it will only produce other Phione and not a Manaphy.

All of Phione's base stats are 80, as opposed to Manaphy's base stats of 100. Phione does not learn the moves Heart Swap or Tail Glow, as Manaphy does. It is also unable to learn a number of moves that Manaphy is able to learn via TM and HM. Oddly enough, it is larger and heavier than Manaphy. Its role and purpose is a mystery.
