Philpstoun is a small village, roughly 2 miles east of the historic county town of Linlithgow. Surrounded by rich arable farm land, the village is comprised almost entirely of housing, with only a community centre and church not being used for this purpose.
The village lies mainly between the Union Canal and the main Edinburgh-Glasgow railway line, although the easternmost part, Old Philpstoun, lies north of the railway and closer to the M9 motorway.
