Phillip Island, Norfolk Island

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Phillip Island is an uninhabited islet located at 29°07′S 167°57′E, a few kilometres south of Norfolk Island in the Southwest Pacific. It forms an integral part of Australia. The island is included in Norfolk Island National Park, as is Nepean Island and about 10 per cent of Norfolk Island proper. Phillip Island measures some 2,100 metres (2,300 yds) from west to east and 1,950 metres (2,100 yds) from north to south and is roughly shaped like a hairdryer with the nozzle pointing east.

The vegetation of Phillip Island was devastated due to the introduction during the penal era of pest animals such as pigs and rabbits. This caused massive erosion lending the island a reddish brown colour as viewed from Norfolk due to the absence of topsoil. However, pest control and remediation work by park staff have recently brought some improvement to Phillip Island's environment. Reforestation is currently underway.
