PhilRadio International

Realizing the lack of Philippine media outside of the Philippines, PhilRadio International started its internet broadcasting in the 1990s, as a 2-hour program from WTRR Radio, Orlando, Florida. When LIVE 365 was launched, PhilRadio realized the potential of a 24/7 stream and has consistently been a top station on LIVE 365.

While the original goal was to reach as many "wired" Filipinos worldwide as possible through the language of music, PhilRadio has gathered many non-Filipino listeners (often friends of Overseas Filipino Workers or the husbands of Filipinas). This has been aided by the fact that much Original Pilipino Music (OPM) has English lyrics. Much of the rest has "good sound," and is so enjoyable that the language barrier is largely ignored.

Filipino music is eclectic, so the founder, Kathy Llamas, decided that PhilRadio International should feature all types of Filipino music from rock to pop to classics and alternative, as a showcase of Philippine music and artists. This exposure has led to the growing international popularity of Filipino artists. Songstresses such as Sharon Cuneta, Lea Salonga, Regine Velasquez, Pops Fernandez, Carol Banawa and others have proven to listeners around the world that they are not merely local stars and can be found on PhilRadio. Likewise, male artists such as Jose Mari Chan, Gary Valenciano and Freddy Aguilar have become popular far beyond their nation's shores, as have groups such as Kikay Hot Babes, Parokya ni Edgar, APO Hiking Society and April Boys. The playlist is a Who's Who of Filipino and Filipino-American music, but PhilRadio has also always been a strong supporter of Filipino talent and has helped many new, struggling and indie artists to be heard wolrdwide.

Due to the cultural influences in the Philippines, PhilRadio also plays some Spanish and American songs that are quite popular with Filipinos. In keeping with the tradition of "turo-turo" ("point-point" buffets, popular in the Philippines) the online, automated broadcast is comprised of an "all-you-can-eat" fare of Filipino music.
