Phenyltoloxamine is an antihistamine that has virtually vanished from the market. Classified as an ethanolamine, it has marked anticholinergic effects. Like other antihistamines in its class, it is an effective inhibitor of the sympathetic response, antagonizing muscarinic receptors on post-ganglionic cells. While some effects of this action are unpleasant (urinary retention, dry mucous membranes, pupillary dilation), it does produce some degree of analgesia, and is therefore marketed as an enhancing agent for acetaminophen, and sold in this combination as Percogesic(R).Also with caffeine in the migraine medication Ed-Flex.
