Pharez

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Book of Genesis, Pharez or Péretz (Hebrew: פֶּרֶץ / פָּרֶץ, Standard Péreẓ / Páreẓ Tiberian Péreṣ / Pāreṣ ; "Breach") is the son of Judah by the Canaanitish woman Tamar. He was the twin brother of Zerah (Gen. 38:27-30). In the Bible, Pharez was born as a result of prostitution, especially sinful because Tamar was Judah's daughter-in-law (such a relationship is forbidden in Lev. 18:15). According to the genealogy provided in the Book of Ruth (4:18-22), Peretz was an ancestor of King David. The Book of Matthew also mentions him (1:3) in establishing the descendency of Jesus from the line of David.
