Pharaildis

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Saint Pharaildis (Dutch: Veerle) (d.750), patron saint of Ghent, was married against her will at a young age with a nobleman. She reportedly stayed a virgin until her death, possibly with consent of her husband. He abused her because of her abstention but it is unclear whether this was as voluntary chastizing because of her not fulfilling marriage vows, or whether there was no agreement between them.
