Phantasy Star Generation:1 (Japanese: ファンタシースター generation:1) is a role-playing game released in 2003 for the Playstation 2 and is an enhanced remake of Phantasy Star, originally released for the Sega Master System in 1987. It is Volume 1 of the Sega Ages 2500 series.
Originally slated for United States and European release by Conspiracy Games, it was later announced as a part of the Phantasy Star Trilogy, a compilation of the remakes of Phantasy Star, Phantasy Star II, and Phantasy Star IV. The compilation's future is uncertain however since Sega reclaimed the publishing rights for the United States and Europe. Sega currently has no plans to publish this or any of the other Phantasy Star remakes outside of Japan, and with Sega of Japan having seemingly abandoned their plans for a Phantasy Star IV remake in favor of a compilation featuring the original iterations of Phantasy Star I-IV, it would seem likely that this game will remain a Japanese exclusive.
[edit] Overview
Much like it's predecessor, Phantasy Star Generation:1 follows the adventures of Alisa Landale, and her companions Tyrone, Myau and Lutz as they quest to overthrow the tyrant, La Shiec.
Phantasy Star Generation:1 features newly designed graphics, arranged versions of music from the original game soundtrack, and fleshed out dialogue which results in both character development and a richer story. The game also includes new features such as a Consultation option which will result in a conversation amongst the party members that can aide players in figuring out what to do next in terms of progression, and an Atlas item which can be purchased from item shops that when activated will help players by automatically mapping dungeons. Players may also purchase a sound test near the end of the game, allowing them to listen to the soundtrack at their leisure.
In addition, completing the game will enable the player to create a System File game save which will allow them to unlock a bonus in Phantasy Star Generation:2.
[edit] Trivia
- The game also included a Sega Ages ring binder which players could add the slips containing information about the original games and interviews with the staff from the games that were coming from the Sega Ages line up.
- Phantasy Star Generation:1 was originally shown to the public in a form that differed very much from the final product. Screenshots depicted a super deformed representation of characters and monsters in battle, however somewhere in the development cycle it was decided to return to a form more like the original series.
