[edit] Writing Style
If you are a resident of his native area you will feel his writings too intimate with you. He would use such a local 'anchalik' term, which is not used in Khari Boli Hindi otherwise, that you would be amazed. His masterpiece is मैला आंचल (Maila Anchal) (The Soiled Border, 1954), a social novel that depicts the life of a region and its people, the backward and the deprived. He got a PadmShri award from Govt. of India for this creation. It was his first novel. Later in Jayaprakash Narayan Andolan, due to Lathicharge on this leader, he gave up his award. His short story मारे गए गुलफाम (Maare Gaye Gulfam) has been made into a film (Teesri Kasam). Another of his short story पंचलाइट (Panchlight) (Petromax) is beautiful in its depiction of human behaviour and pristine thinking. One can find many parallels between his and Premchand's writings. He always looked to the very basic feelings of the common people of that region and hence is sometimes referred as "anchalik kathakar" ( vaguely translated to regional story-writer). He, however, was very natural in creating a "local" background in his stories compared to other writers like Premchand. Nearly all of his writings mention of the Katihar railway station.
His writing was mainly descriptive. His character building was very fast as characters usually didn't have anything more in themselves than a pristine human (usually) mind. Het setted his background from every possible angle - giving it vitality. In nearly all of his stories, feelings of the 'Patra' (character) predominated over the happenings. एक आदिम रात्रि की महक (Ek Aadim Ratri Ki Mehak) is a nice example of it. He wrote every small detail of the thinking of the character. Story went strightforward all the time with a very touchy ending.
