PFC Spartak Varna is a Bulgarian football team based in Varna and founded on 28 August 1918. The original name of the club was Sokol (Falcon), which is the source of the club's nickname — The Falcons. After a one-season stay in the second Bulgarian division in 2005/06, they have returned to the A PFG by decisively winning the East B PFG.
[edit] History
The club was founded on 28 August 1918 as "Sokol" (English: "Falcon"). It is renamed to "Shipchenski Sokol" (Falcon of Shipka) after it merged with "Shipka" on 30 January 1924. Shipka is a peak in Stara planina, where an important battle was fought during the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878. As a result of this war and partly due to the battle at Shipka Bulgaria gained its freedom.
The team became the champion of Bulgaria in 1932. This happened on 18 September after a 2-1 win over AS-23. Shipchenski Sokol also took the Tzar's Cup.
The club gets its modern name in 1945 after on 18 October it merges with Levski and Radetski, two other clubs from Varna.
Spartak was actually called JSK-Spartak between 1969 and 1985. This happened because of another merger - this time with Varna's Lokomotiv.
