[edit] Character history
Peyton Elizabeth Sawyer was born to Elizabeth Harp and her boyfriend (name unknown as of spring 2006) in 1988. Soon after her birth Peyton was adopted by young couple Larry Sawyer and Anna Sawyer. Peyton found out that she was adopted when her biological mother showed up at the end of the second season.
Peyton is a very talented artist. She forged a friendship with Brooke Davis during the third grade and continued over the years. During the first season, she was the girlfriend of Nathan Scott, but they soon broke up since their relationship was more about the "benefits" than love. She then had an interest for Lucas Scott, Nathan's half brother. After a lot of thinking, she finally decided that she really wanted to be with Lucas, but it was too late, as Lucas was falling for Brooke Davis, Peyton's best friend. Eventually, Peyton and Lucas hooked up and declared their love for each other, but they forgot about Brooke. When Brooke found out about them, she was heartbroken and furious. She ended both of her friendship with Peyton and relationship with Lucas. Peyton befriended Jake Jagielski (played by Bryan Greenberg) and eventually developed a crush on him in season two. the relationship was based upon his baby girl and the fact that she didn't have a mother. Had Peyton found the family she always wanted?
At the beginning of the third season, we found out that Peyton is adopted and her biological mother is alive. Peyton rejected her at the beginning but she soon connects with her, and she soon finds out that her mother, Ellie, has breast cancer. Peyton and Ellie worked to make a CD where its profits goes to the breast cancer foundation. On the same day when the CD is released, Ellie passed away which left Peyton devastated.
During the middle of the third season, Peyton decided to give her love life another try and she hooked up with Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy. Their relationship didn't work out since Pete was always busy and Peyton decided to give Jake a visit in Savannah. Peyton renews her relationship with Jake and Jenny and decides to stay with them. But that idea soon ends when Peyton is forced to confront her bottled feelings for Lucas and Jake tells her to go back to Tree Hill to see if he feels the same. In the season 3 finale, Brooke ends her friendship once again with Peyton after Peyton tells her that she still has feelings for Lucas. At the end of the episode, Peyton burns the drawing of herself, Brooke, and Lucas, and it shows two things in the coming: either Peyton decides to leave Brooke and Lucas alone forever and never resurface the 'triangle', or she decides to fight for Lucas and be with him, with or without Brooke's blessing.
In the fourth season premiere, viewers find out Peyton has a half-brother, Derek and Peyton is trying to forge a relationship with him by openly webcasting to him. Too bad the guy who comes isn't her brother and instead is a twisted rapist with a stungun. This imposter escaped the police and from the looks of it, it seems that he might return to haunt Peyton again. Meanwhile, Peyton is going to have to recover from the shock of this all and deal with her hidden love for Lucas. PSYCHODEREK, as she calls him, is finally arrested and is in jail. Meanwhile, her real brother teaches her to overcome her fear and take a risk, which she does by asking Lucas to the basketball banquet. He kindly tells her no because he already was asked by Brooke. She goes to the banquet with her brother as her date. Afterwards, he leaves her and is deployed to Iraq.
Peyton later finally admits to Lucas that she is in love with him. She finally finds the strength to tell him after he tells her that he now realizes that Brooke is not the one for him. Only Lucas responds with an "oh" and mumbles something about being friends. Peyton is seemingly okay with this. It is only after the Ravens win the state championship and some encouragement from Brooke that Lucas realizes he wants more with Peyton. He goes to Peyton and tells her that she is the one he wants standing next to him when all his dreams come true.
