Petersburg National Battlefield, at 1539 Hickory Hill Road in Petersburg, Virginia, commemorates the Siege of Petersburg during which the Union Army waged a 10-month campaign here from 1864 to 1865.
The park also includes the City Point Unit in Hopewell, Virginia. The Five Forks Battlefield Unit, in Dinwiddie County, is where the confederate collapse led to the fall of the city and ultimately of Richmond, Virginia. The park also maintains the 8.72 acre Poplar Grove National Cemetery in Petersburg, and its 6315 interments of which 4110 are unidentified.
Established as Petersburg National Military Park July 3, 1926; transferred from the War Department August 10, 1933; redesignated August 24, 1962. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966.
