Peter Pohl

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peter Pohl (Hamburg, Germany, 5 December 1940) is a Swedish author, mainly of youth literature. As of 2005, he has written 25 books. 2 of those have been translated into English, 13 have been translated in a total number of 13 languages. Pohl's themes are sad: themes like death, bullying, loneliness are often part of his books, and almost none of his books have a happy ending. Many of his books have autobiographical elements, especially the rainbow-series. For many books, it is not clear whether those are youth books or adult books. They can be found in both sections of libraries. Most of the books are prose. Some books, like Vill dig and Minns det are poetic. Others, like Tillsammans kan vi förändra världen, are very difficult to place in a category.

[edit] Biography

Peter Pohl was born in 1940 in Germany. His father died in World War II. After the war, Pohl and his mother moved to Sweden, where he started at school in 1947. After the fourth class he left his first school in order to go to the Södra Latin gymnasium in Stockholm, where he finished his exam with good marks eight years later. Besides school, Pohl was a runner and when he is fifteen years old also a youth leader at the summercamp of Södra Latin. The experiences here were very important for his many of his books.

In 1975, Pohl graduated and became a professor in Numerical analysis. Five years later he started filming, and with success: he won various prizes for his work. His writing career started in 1983 and two years later he published his first and most successful book: Johnny, My Friend. Meanwhile, the texts for Regnbågen har bara åtta färger and Vi kallar honom Anna were already ready. The latter was initially published as an adult book but received little attention. Because these books are for a great deal about his own life, this was disappointing for Pohl.
