Peter Lang is a major international academic publisher with its head office in Bern, Switzerland, and other offices in Berlin, Brussels, Frankfurt am Main, New York, Oxford and Vienna. It publishes predominantly in English, though also in German, French and occasionally other languages. Books are distributed direct from Switzerland and are not usually available in bookshops. Primary markets are university libraries of Europe and North America.

The press started as a publisher specialising in PhD theses and similar academic volumes, mainly in German. It has broadened its scope, shifted its language focus to English, and established itself as a well-respected press. It has one of the biggest lists of titles in print of any press in the world. Its future development plans include the move to supplying bookshops.
