Peter Eyre (cricketer)

Thomas John Peter Eyre (born October 17, 1939) was an English cricketer. He was a left-handed batsman and a right-arm medium-fast bowler who played for Derbyshire between 1959 and 1972. He made his first-class debut in a University match in 1959, before his County Championship debut two months later. Expensive with the ball in the first innings, he scored a duck and didn’t appear in the first team again for over a year.

A first-team choice during 1960 after a decent spell for the second team, Derbyshire finished in fifth place the following season, although during the following three seasons, Eyre didn’t turn out much for the first team, instead sticking with the Second XI. In the early part of the 1960s, the Derbyshire team had a good run of form, and Eyre found himself frequently in the first team.

He played less often as he advanced in age, though he stayed faithful to the team during the painfully inconsistent years of the late 1960s/early 1970s. Low in the team averages for the 1971 season, he lasted just one more year before retiring from first-class cricket.

Eyre remained a lower-order batsman throughout his time at Derbyshire, and had best bowling figures of 8-65 against Somerset in 1969.
