Peter Doherty was a football (soccer) player and manager from Northern Ireland.

He played for Manchester City between 1936 and 1945. The Manchester team paid a then club record of £10,000 for his services and he scored 81 goals in 133 appearances for the team. He transferred to Derby County in 1945 and also played for Huddersfield Town and Doncaster Rovers. He won a league championship medal with Manchester City in 1937 and a cup winners medal with Derby County in the 1946 FA Cup Final. He also won sixteen caps for the Northern Ireland national team. His performances earned him the nickname, Peter 'the Great' Doherty. He was regarded by the Legendary Joe Mercer, as the greatest player who ever lived.

He later became a successful football manager with Northern Ireland (1951-1962) and led the country to the 1958 World Cup Finals.

Doherty was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
