Peter Balakian

Peter Balakian (born 1951) is an Armenian-American poet, writer and academic.
Among Balakian's books are Black Dog of Fate (1997), a memoir of his family's experiences during the Armenian Genocide which won the PEN/Martha Albrand Prize for Memoir, The Burning Tigris: The Armenian Genocide and America's Response, and June-tree: New and Selected Poems 1974–2000.
Balakian grew up in Teaneck and Tenafly, New Jersey, and earned his B.A. from Bucknell University in 1973. In 1980 he earned his Ph.D. in American Civilization from Brown University. He is currently Donald M. and Constance H. Rebar Chair in Humanities, Professor of English, and Professor of University Studies at Colgate University.
