Peter Acland

Peter Bevil Edward Acland OBE, OStJ, TD, MC DL, JP (9 July 1902 – 1993) was a British soldier.

The son of Alfred Dyke Acland and Beatrice Danvers Smith, he was educated in Eton College, Berkshire and Christ Church, Oxford. Acland worked for the Sudan Political Service and received the Order of the Nile. In the Second World War he was wounded and was decorated with a Military Cross in 1941. Made a Temporary Brigadier in 1947, he commanded the 296 Field Regiment, Royal Devon Yeaomanry until 1951. Two years later, he became a Honorary Colonel. Acland was made a Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1946, and was decorated with the Territorial Decoration in 1948. From 1948 to 1962, he was Deputy Lieutenant of Devon, High Sheriff of Devon in 1961 and Justice of Peace of Devon, the following year. Invested as a Office of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, he was also Vice Lord Lieutenant of Devon between 1962 and 1993.

On 7 July 1927, he married Bridget Susan Barnett, daughter of Reverend Herbert Barnett. They had two sons:

• Major-General John Hugh Bevil Acland (1928–2006)
• Antony Arthur Acland (b. 1930)
