Talk:Peso
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Peso did not exist in Mexico until 1864, long after the US dollar was created. It was not a model for the US dollar. The dollar was modeled loosely after the Spanish 8 reales coin. The US dollar coin was not popular as international coinage since the Spanish 8 reales was both of finer silver .903 compared to the early 19th century US standard of .892 and weighed more, 27.07 grams compared to the US weight of 26.96 grams. The US later created the "Trade Dollar" for international transactions. It was equal to a Spanish 8 reales coin and only circulated outside the US.
I'm not up for doing a complete article on the Peso but the current one needs help!
