[edit] Plot

The year is 1969 - but not as we knew it.

Two centuries earlier, an Italian alchemist accidentally uncovered the basic secrets of genetic science. In the process he released a swathe of virulent diseases which the human race still battles.

Another consequence of these early experiments was the inadvertent creation of a new race of people - The Brothers; the result of a genetic mutation initiated by a virus, only occurring in males.

The Brothers are superior beings in mind and body who have become the custodians of genetic science; keeping its dangerous potential in safety until better understood. They also help humanity fight the diseases that regularly sweep the planet. The relationship is symbiotic. In return for a dedication to preserving human life, The Brothers ask humanity to share only one thing: Their blood.

The Brothers are Vampires; not the vampires of European myth, but living breathing creatures - perhaps the next evolutionary step. They live long - 200 years or more, remaining youthful until near death, when they rapidly decay in mind and body.

Old prejudices, fed by the superstitions of the mythical vampire, simmer in this world, but these are largely suppressed when a new, virulent form of influenza cuts a swathe through the population. Humanity needs the help of the wise and serene Brothers to fight this microbial war.

Then a problem arises that threatens to destroy everything: One of The Brothers has begun to do what no other Brother has ever done - to hunt human beings. Order and peace between the races is threatened and the ancient myth of the vampire creeps back into the minds of men and women.

If news escapes, the fragile balance that exists between the two races will be shattered forever. Instead the Brothers attempt to deal with the problem in secret, assigning one of their own, Silus (Scott), to capture the renegade who threatens it all - his twin brother, Edgar.

Failing this task single-handed, Silus is forced to work with humans; a policewoman - Lilly Hour (Burrows). She is the antithesis of Silus; born in the hard, desolate slums of Jamestown, from which she somehow fashioned a police career.

The attraction is mutual and almost immediate. Both are noble and good, both trying to avert disaster in a decaying world. In a rising atmosphere of political and social disquiet they hunt the rogue, discovering as they do that Edgar is behaving like no Brother before him - he has become like the vampire of myth. And it seems certain he will only become increasingly dangerous and insane until he is stopped.

After a perilous game of cat and mouse, Silus and Lilly trap Edgar, though Lilly is wounded in the process. At the hospital, she and Silus share a private moment before going their separate ways. Their lives move forward, but the bond has been formed.

As time passes, in the vaults of the Brothers Central Command centre, Edgar's mind is clearly aging while his body stays youthful. Yet he still retains a glimmer of hope. He has sworn to enact revenge, telling Silus he will "drink them all dry, especially your little policewoman." And this monster is patient.

As Silus and Lilly reach the pinnacle of their separate hierarchies, the beast escapes, set to enact revenge on those who imprisoned him; his thoughts centring on just two: His adored brother, Silus and the woman Edgar knows he desires - Lilly. The one he's tasted before.

In an act of biological terrorism, Edgar releases a genetically designed disease, resolving to destroy Silus and Lilly on the way to completing his final task.

Like a spider in his web, Edgar draws the pair towards him, in the process willing the birth of a new world - where nobility is replaced by carnage; where hope is replaced by blood…
