"Perfect" is a song by The Smashing Pumpkins. It was the second single from their fourth album, Adore (1998). The song is audibly similar to "1979", the second single from their previous album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. "Perfect" was written by Billy Corgan.

By the time this single had been released, interest in the Pumpkins' new sound and their new album Adore was starting to diminish. The third single from the album was intended to be "Crestfallen" or "To Sheila". Promotional singles were issued for both, but it appeared that "Crestfallen" would be the single when the band performed it live at the VH1 Fashion Awards. However, due to low sales for the album, "Perfect" remained as the second and final single from the album.

The band performed the song once on Saturday Night Live, introduced by Cameron Diaz.

[edit] About The Song

Perfect (like "1979") is considered to be one of Billy Corgan's happier tunes written and performed by The Smashing Pumpkins.

The song's subject is (quite conclusively) about a relationship that has broken up. The singer admits that it has been some time since the demise of the relationship, and that he does not pretend that it ended for a reason. However, he says that if it was reconciled it would be "Perfect".

[edit] Music Video

To expand on the similarities between "Perfect" and "1979", the band released a music video which continued the story of the characters in "1979". They were able to find and use 4 out of the 5 original actors from the 1979 video, including Giuseppe Andrews. The fifth was in jail. The same crew of directors was hired, which consisted of husband Jonathan Dayton and wife Valerie Faris.

Fans were invited to attend the taping of the live performance scenes of the video, and were privileged to see the band playing an energetic set of heavier songs they didn't perform at the time. The set included songs like "Where Boys Fear to Tread", "Bodies" and "Pug".

The video debuted on MTV's "120 Minutes" on the 16th.
