Pennsylvania Punch Bowl

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pennsylvania Punch Bowl is a humor magazine published by students at the University of Pennsylvania.

Founded by members of Mask and Wig in 1899, Punch Bowl has been a consistent presence on Penn's campus during the 20th century.[citation needed] During this time, it has satirized everything from the Vietnam War to what it sees as journalistic incompetence at the Daily Pennsylvanian. The Punch Bowl currently publishes three times a year.

In an issue of The Paris Review in 1962, Ezra Pound offhandly quoted the magazine of his alma mater when asked what advice he could give to the young: "To improve their curiosity and not to fake. But that is not enough. The mere registering of bellyache and the mere dumping of the ashcan is not enough. In fact the University of Pennsylvania student Punch Bowl used to have as its motto, "'Any damn fool can be spontaneous.'"[1] Ezra Pound is often misquoted as having said this himself.[2]
