Penn Foster Career School is one of the largest distance education career schools in the world. Founded in 1890 by Thomas J. Foster, the institution focuses on vocational and technical training in the fields of business, technology, health care, and trades such as automotive technology. Training programs are shipped directly to the student (with books, tools, software, etc.) with online services and tutorial support. Some health care programs such as Medical Billing and Coding, Medical Transcription, and Medical Office Assisting are available in a wholly online version. Penn Foster Career School is headquartered in Scranton, Pennsylvania and is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Secondary Schools for its vocational-technical programs. It is also nationally accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Educational and Training Council (DETC) and a member of the Pennsylvania Association of Two-Year Colleges.
