Penarddun

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Welsh mythology, Penarddun is the wife of Llyr and a daughter of Beli Mawr. The Second Branch of the Mabinogi names Bran, Branwen, and Manawydan as her children by Llyr, and she has two additional sons by Eurosswydd. These are Nisien, a good man, and Efnisien, a coniving troublemaker.[1] The Welsh Triads call Llyr one of the Three Exalted Prisoners of Britain for his captivity at Eurosswydd's hands; this likely refers to a lost tradition of the birth of Penarddun's younger sons.[2]

This theonym might perhaps be derived from the Proto-Celtic roots *kʷenno- 'head' and *ardwo- 'high'.[3]
