The School was established in January 1974 as the amalgamation of King's College, a school for boys, and Girton Girls' School. The founding schools were independent, neighbouring schools of quality and have a combined history dating back to 1915. The School comprises of the two original campuses, the Kings Campus and the Girton Campus. The school's motto, "Ex Unitate Vires," meaning "In Unity, Strength," is imprinted onto the schools emblem.

As King's College, the school was also responsible for the iconic Green and Gold Cookery Book, first published in 1923 and still available for purchase today.

The book, Principles and Pragmatism, tells us about the great story of how the two schools, Girton and Kings, came together. This book was written by then teacher at the school, John Davis.

[edit] School Structure

Pembroke is divided into three 'sub-schools':

  • Junior School (Years ELC - Yr 6)
  • Middle School (Years 7-10)
  • Senior School (Years 11-12)

In the Junior School, students are allocated into four houses (blue, red, green and yellow) which are used for sporting events.

In the Middle School (and the Senior School to some extent) students are allocated to one of the school's eight Houses: Hill (red), Wright (dark green), Smith (baby blue), Yates (yellow), Mellor (dark blue), Medlin (purple), Reeves (orange) and the school's newest house Oats (light green). Students are allocated into one of the houses which depending upon their year level serve as their Tutorial group.
