Pemberton, Greater Manchester

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pemberton is an area/ward and residential suburb in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, Greater Manchester, North West England, separated by the River Douglas from Wigan itself. Pemberton forms a component district of the 'Wigan Urban Area'.

It was formerly a township in Wigan parish (in the hundred of West Derby), and was recognised as a separate civil parish in 1866. Pemberton constituted an urban district in its own right from 1894 to 1904, when it was added to the county borough of Wigan.

The electoral ward of Pemberton covers the following localities

Pemberton itself is part of the Douglas ward.

The area is made up of privately owned homes and local authority maintained housing, including Worsley Mesnes, Norley Hall, Marsh Green and Kitt Green. Pemberton and its adjoining district of Orrell are essentially one continuous residential area. The Robin Park complex is also part of the Pemberton neighbourhood. It includes retail parks and sports and leisure facilities as well as the JJB Stadium, which is home to Wigan Athletic Football Club and Wigan Warriors Rugby League Club.

There were several collieries in the area, and sandstone was also quarried. At Newtown were cotton mills and iron works. A well at Lamberhead Green (Pingate) was noted for its excellent water quality. The area is served by Pemberton railway station.
