Pekanbaru

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pekanbaru is the capital of Riau, a province in Indonesia on the island of Sumatra. It has an area of 446.5 km² and population about 700,000.

Pekanbaru is located in the central part of Riau. The Siak River runs through the city, from Rumbai in the north. Siak is the deepest river in Indonesia[citation needed]. The city, whose name means 'new market' in old Indonesian, is at the furthest navigable port on the river.

The city is divided into 9 subdistricts (kecamatan).

The Sultan Syarif Qasim II International Airport serves flights to and from Pekanbaru with direct flights to Batam, Jakarta, Malaysia (Malacca and Kuala Lumpur), Singapore and other destinations in Indonesia.

Oil was discovered nearby in 1939 and has been the driving force behind the economic development of Pekanbaru. International oil companies, such as Chevron and Caltex, are located throughout Riau province, as are domestic companies. The offices of Chevron Indonesia are located in the subdistrict of Rumbai. Located at nearby Kerinci is the world's largest cellulose (pulp) mill [citation needed]. Named Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper, it produces 1.2 million tons per year, and belongs to the APRIL Group. Perawang is another large pulp and paper mill in the Pekanbaru area, and it belongs to the APP Group.

Pekanbaru is one of the cleanest big cities in Indonesia [1] and in 2006 received the "Adipura" award ('clean city') in the category of large city. In second place was Denpasar, Bali, and in third, Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. Pekanbaru is also notable for its wide streets. Pekanbaru regularly suffers, however, from smog due to forest fires, particularly in the dry season.

Some tourism objects in Pekanbaru are Great Mosque of An-Nur, Alam Mayang Fishing Garden, Sang Nila Utama Museum, Riau Cultural Park, Princess Kaca Mayang Garden, Sari Valley Artificial Lake. Pekanbaru will be set out as a center of malay culture in the world overwhere world malay culture festival was held in 2004.
