The most famous that is not just its natural beauty is that tourism dominates the industry and has a beach, hotels, spas, restaurants, taverns, etc. The most infamous was that on August 26, 2006, a forest fire ravaged Pefkochori and devastated much of the forests and buildings in the outskirts of the area. Several houses and villas were burnt. Hydro was snapped out and roads were closed. All residents were to be evacuated as well as tourists who were to leave the area.
Paliouri was linked with pavement in the mid-20th century and generated a growth on tourism, hydro and phone lines soon followed as well as more paved roads in the 1980s. The population growths in the later part of the 20th century and recent years generated by tourism and had a low unemployment rate during these times, the growth in percentage slowed but not in numbers and rare continued but made its rural settlement Panorama abandoned due to emigration to other parts of northern Greece and the world as well as parts of the rural areas in the 20th century.
