Peconic County is a proposed new county in New York. If created, it would consist of the easternmost portions of Suffolk County and would tentatively include the towns of East Hampton, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Southampton and Southold. Some residents feel this region, which is less urbanized than the rest of Suffolk County and contains the Hamptons and other wealthy areas, would be better represented as a separate political entity.

In recent years, expansion of the New York metropolitan area has brought urbanization to the western end of Suffolk County. Proponents of an independent Peconic County cite the disappearance of farming and fishing industries as a concern that should be addressed, and desire to maintain the countryside that once characterized Long Island. It is presumed that a Peconic County would take efforts to prevent urban expansion and promote the fishing and farming industries.

Efforts to create the county are currently inactive.
