Peanut sauce

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Peanut sauce (also called "satay sauce") is initially an oriental sauce and widely use in Indonesian cuisine (known as kacang sambal). Its main ingredient is peanut butter with kecap giving it a salty and spicy taste. Initially the sauce had been meant as a sauce for satay, but is used in many other Indonesian dishes like Saté Babi, Saté Ayam, Gado-Gado, Keredok, as well.

In the Netherlands, peanut sauce has become a typical Dutch dish and is mostly eaten with meat (barbecue and gourmetten), chips and frikandellen (a popular Dutch snack). However peanut sauce is also eaten with a baguette, bread, cucumber or potatoes.

Several different recipes for making satay sauces exist, which means that all these satay sauces taste differently. A home-made recipe contains among other things; peanut butter, milk, kecap and spices (such as ginger and others to make it spicier). Some peanut sauces also contain fried onions, sesame seed or olive oil.
