Peace be upon him (Hebrew: עליו השלום; alav ha-shalom) is a phrase that Orthodox Jews are accustomed to say after mentioning the name of the Jewish prophet Moses and several other major prophets.
It is customary to add alav ha-shalom to the names of major prophets including Moses (Moshe), Abraham (Avraham), Isaac (Yitzchak) and Jacob (Yaakov).
However, it is also commonly placed behind the names of other deceased Jews; It is particularly common after the names of deceased righteous women. In English, it is customarily abbreviated to "a'h".
Other honorifics that may be used for deceased Jews include:
- זיכרונו לברכה zichrono livrachah, abbreviated ז"ל (Z"L): 'of blessed memory' (male version)
