Peace Learning Center

Peace Learning Center is a community organization dedicated to promoting a culture of peace through education to youth and families, Peace Learning Center has three main campuses - Peace Learning Center Eagle Creek Park and Peace Learning Center Lawrence - both in Indianapolis, Indiana and Peace Learning Center Columbus located at the Columbus Youth Camp in southern Indiana, USA.

PURPOSE Peace Learning Center is a community educational institution that teaches peacebuilding and communication skills to youth and adults. Just like the rules of the road for driving, PLC establishes safe and common ways to deal with conflicts and differences.

BACKGROUND AND RESULTS Started in 1997, Peace Learning Center has reached over 85,000 youth, school staff, and parents in our community.

Evaluation results include: 91% of participants know three peacemaking skills after attending a four-hour experience. 83% of teachers report witnessing their students using skills learned at Peace Learning Center.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

Peace Education Ages: 3rd through 6th Grades Peace Education provides an interactive day of learning that includes follow-up lessons and an in-class mediation process. Students learn community leadership, conflict resolution, and non-violent self defense. Focusing on personal responsibility and critical thinking, youth participate in role plays and a nature walk.

Peace Learning Camp Ages: 4th through 9th Grades Peace Learning Camp provides a three-day overnight experience at Columbus Youth Camp in Southern, Indiana. Students engage in small group learning about interpersonal communication, diversity appreciation, and environmental stewardship while improving their peacebuilding skills.

Peace Learning Services Ages: 6th grade through 12th Grades Hosting workshops on-site and at our campuses, participants learn to address the root causes of conflict through dialogue and active learning. Non-violent alternatives, conflict resolution, cooperation, empathy and self esteem are included in a wide variety of topics offered.

Summer Program Ages: 3rd through 12th Grades Peace Learning Center provides a full-day peace leadership experience that includes conflict resolution, diversity awareness, peer-to-peer dialogue and a nature walk. We invite summer camps, teen groups, and community organizations to engage their youth in learning.


ADULT PROGRAMS

From one-hour skill-building workshops to three-day sessions, Peace Learning Center engages teams from schools, businesses, community and faith-based organizations to learn communication and peacebuilding skills. Peace Learning Center can tailor programs to meet the group’s needs.

OUTREACH

Our Beloved Community Festival honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Celebration of Peace are community events hosted by Peace Learning Center.

Peace Hikes and Yoga classes are operated by Peace Through Yoga, a community partner.
