PBS Kids (often styled all-caps as "PBS KIDS") is the umbrella brand for children's programming aired by the Public Broadcasting Service in the United States. As with all PBS programming, PBS Kids programming is non-commercial.

Recently, PBS Kids launched a new lineup of programming called PBS Kids GO!. This lineup features PBS Kids programming targeted at somewhat older kids and preteens that used to air under the general PBS Kids umbrella, such as Arthur and Cyberchase. Miss Lori and Hooper appears debut on PBS Kids starting with Curious George, Dragon Tales, Clifford the Big Red Dog, and It's a Big Big World. During the commercial from 1999-2004, the Des'ree song "You Gotta Be" was played. Currently, it is aired with the song "Only You".

PBS KIDS Channel was a separate television network founded on September 6, 1999 and targeted at children aged 3-10 years. As of October 1, 2005, the feed ceased operation in favor of a new joint commercial venture, PBS KIDS Sprout. The PBS Kids Channel aired from May 2000 through September 26, 2005 on DirectTV and digital cable through October 1, 2005. The PBS Kids Channel had been up and running for six years and was largely paid for by DirecTV, which decided not to renew its licensing deal. Its replacement, Sprout, is a partnership owned by Comcast (40%), Henson International Television (Now usually referred to as HIT Entertainment) (30%), PBS (15%), and Sesame Workshop (formerly, CTW) (15%). Some stations (such as WNET and TPT) still program a PBS Kids channel themselves.

[edit] Idents

PBS Kids idents are shown at the end of each show. There are 3 main sets. The first set basically has a green background. The first ident is a boy named "Dash", who blinks his eye, zooms out, says, "Doink!", and thinks about "PBS" in a thought bubble. The second ident is a girl named "Dot", who runs all the way to the screen and runs into it. She also says doink and thinks about "PBS". The second set has basically a blue background. The first ident is the boy who walks like a caveman and swims like a scuba diver. Then, he turns into a robot and grabs the letters "PBS". There is no doink sound or something like it. The second one is the girl "Dot", who walks like a cat, swims like an octopus, and flies in space as an astronaut. Then she soars into the PBS Kids logo, and says, "Doy!" instead of "Doink!". Within these two idents, a smaller version of the opposite ident is in the corner. The final set has two idents also. The first has Dash skating on ice. The screen shakes and zooms out, to discover that he is inside a snow globe. The snowglobe is held by Dot and giggles. Then you can hear doink and the PBS Kids logo with Dot comes into view. There is another version of this ident which is slightly different. It is only seen at the end of Jakers! The second ident has Dash peering into his fishbowl. The camera zooms in, and Dash is now a fish. Dot is also a fish and gobbles Dash up. Once again, doink is heard and Dot is in the logo. At the end of all of these six idents, kids sing voiceover, "PBS Kids!". In the Miss Lori and Hooper block, there are many different idents after each program. They do not include the PBS Kids boy or girl as of September 1999, except for the last few seconds when Dash is shown in the PBS Kids logo. Some include still pictures of real children, but do occasionally move a little bit. These idents usually have a general theme, such as dinosaurs, bees, a picnic, or someone talking pictures with a camera. At this time, the kids doesn't sing voiceover "PBS Kids!".

[edit] TV Schedule idents

PBS Kids knows what's coming up next after the program. The first schedule ident was a pinball machine, the boy pulls the handle and plays pinball and lands on top of the center circle, then opens the screen and see what's coming up next, and plays the pinball again and hits the green circle along with the show title and shadows in. The next one is the racing cars, two cars racing going the looping, and opens the PBS Kids logo door and see what's coming up next, and closes the door from the back zooms out and green circle with the show title appears. And the third one is the jack-in-the-box. Dot turns a crank until seeing the program screen to see what's coming up next, then she turns a crank again and the clown comes out, instead of hearing Pop Goes the Weasel, she hears the PBS Kids theme.

[edit] Quotes

  • PBS Kids/This Program was made possible by your support of your local PBS Station. (2000-2005)
  • Use your imagination, PBS Kids and You!
  • Imagine the possibilities, PBS Kids and You!
  • Be more PBS Kids, be more (insert PBS Station)

[edit] Title name puns

  • Pet-Tacular is a cross between a pet and spectacular.
  • Between the Lions: the title itself is a twofold pun. First on the phrase "between the lines", and second is that many classic library buildings have two lions separated by the main entrance. Thus in order to enter the library, you must go "between the lions.")
