These lists feature links of all related articles in one place in conveniant alphabetical order. This is sometimes more conveniant than using the Wikipedia:Categories which subdivides sometimes to the point of confusion. For example try looking up the philosopher 'Archibald Alison' without using the search engine and instead using category philosophers (for example if you only apporximately knew the spelling of the philosopher's name). That is the genius of alphabetical and comprehensive lists, and it is my belief they are very much encyclopedic. Furthermore the examples here are the tip of an iceberg, also check many of the lists at List of topic lists.:
