I'm some guy who knows a little of this and that. I've worked in print publishing off and on for 35 years. Wikipedia pertinent skills include: writing, newspaper and magazine editing, copy editing, proofreading, etc. (I have been paid to use these skills in the past. This isn't a brag (well, maybe a little.) Rather, I'm noting that my claiming these skills isn't just self-reporting.) I started on Wikipedia in June, 2005 but I've been part of online communities since 1985 or so, long before the internet became the World Wide Web. In those days, dull and insensate giant dinosaurs such as CIS and GEnie ruled the online world and mammal-like BBSs often lived brief but wondrous lives. In light of this, I think I'm technically an internet "codger". Perhaps "relic" is more appropriate.

I'm currently proofreading and tightening prose on various articles, mostly found through the Recent Changes page. I'm also a member of the Counter-Vandalism Unit. Other projects I'm working on in varying degrees:

Basically, I'm working on being a good Wikipedian and finding projects suited to my skills and interests. I consider myself a little above Wikipedia beginner level but still learning the ropes. Assume my good faith in editing and if I make mistakes, please notify me. I'm not infallible and I've been known to get cranky. If I act incivil, please let me know.

Working on vandalism patrol has given me some sympathy with the position of requiring editors to register and create an account before editing. A fairly cogent analysis of this position can be found here: User:Bluemoose/Thoughts. A side project for me is to research how many anonymous IP addresses contribute usefully to Wikipedia. It'll be a rough and unscientific poll but it would be useful to know. I need to learn if there is a way to query the database about this sort of thing.

Current Pet Peeve: The remarkably low levels of footnotes, references, and third-party sources to support information in the body of many articles.

Current short-term goal: Finishing the time-consuming Starwood Mediation.
