Paula (EarthBound)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Paula Polestar (ポーラ?) is a fictional character in the RPG EarthBound for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and is the only female party member. She lives in Twoson.
[edit] Earthbound
Paula is a PSI master and compensates for her lack of strength and HP with her psychic abilities, her very high PP (Psychic Points) (Japanese: Psycho Points) level, and having the highest speed of the four main characters. Paula comes from Twoson, and joins Ness after he saves her from the Happy Happyist Cult. Two of Paula's offensive PSI, PK Fire & PK Thunder, called PSI Fire and PSI Thunder in the English version are used by Ness in the Super Smash Bros. game series, sparking much confusion; though it could be concluded that "PK" stands for psychokinesis or psychokinetic.) Moreover, in EarthBound, Ness is not able to use these attacks. The trophy of Paula suggests she might have taught him PK Fire and PK Thunder so that Ness could use it in the Super Smash Bros. series, but this did not in fact happen in EarthBound, so theoretically, this may have happened after Earthbound.
Some fans of EarthBound believe there may be romantic feelings between Paula and Ness. Neither of the characters directly convey amorous feelings for each other (in fact, Ness doesn't express any emotion nor talks for the entire game). The only evidence to back this theory up is the end of the game where Paula requests Ness escort her home; during this time, several characters do make the odd comment about such a possibility (Jeff suggests that he'll be the one to fix their broken appliances if they ever "get hitched"). Also to support this theory is the song "Smiles and Tears" which plays at the ending of Mother 2/Earthbound.
Paula is also the only character to leave rest of the team by force (although Poo also leaves, he does so at his master's request to master PK Starstorm). She is kidnapped by the Department Store Spook (under Giygas' orders) and is not released until Ness and Jeff complete a number of tasks, including going through the abnormal mirror world of Moonside, defeating the Evil Mani Mani, and making their way up to Monotoli's room.
Paula's unique "Pray" command is a key part of the game, as the player must use it nine times during the third stage of the final battle to defeat Giygas.
[edit] Mother 3
Like the rest of the Chosen Four, Paula makes only a small apperence in Mother 3. She is seen only in the New Pork City Theater's movie. There are also two Paula look-alikes in the game as well. The first woud be Nana, who looks exactly like Paula (with the only difference being Nana has a ponytail after Chapter 4. Other than that, the resemblence is uncanny). The second would be the "Zombie Lady," who has long, blonde hair and a red dress. There are also various ribbons Boney and Kumatora can equip and a "Faux Frypan" weapon for Kumatora.
