Paul Vogt
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Paul Vogt (born December 16, 1964, in Buffalo, New York) was, from 2002 to 2005, one of the lead actors on the comedy sketch-show MADtv. He left the show because he had an out in his contract after 3 years.
He worked in several other theater and television productions; he has also guest starred on Chicago Hope and The In-Laws, both with his twin brother. Vogt was recently a regular cast member of the NBC summer series The Rerun Show. One of the many characters he portrayed one for which he received a lot of attention was Mrs. Edna Garrett from The Facts of Life. Paul has also done several commercials, independent films, and stage work. Most recently he was seen in Happy Days: the musical for Garry Marshall at the Falcon Theater in Burbank. He also appeared in Mr. Marshall's film Raising Helen. He is now starring the New England premiere of Hairspray as Edna Turnblad (originally played by Divine in the John Water's film and then by Tony winner Harvey Fierstein on Broadway).[1]
He has a twin brother, Peter Allen Vogt, who has appeared with him in some sketchs on MADtv.
Paul lives in Los Angeles, California.
[edit] MADtv
Vogt joined the cast of MADtv during the eighth season as a featured player, then was promoted to repertory status the following. Aged 37 years, 8 months when he joined the cast, Vogt is (as of November 2006) the oldest new cast member in the history of the show (Michael McDonald, the second-oldest new cast member, was 33 years, 8 months old when he joined). During his short tenure at the sketch, he created memorable characters, such as flamboyant Lillian Verner Game Show host Dale Briskett and Angela Wright's Canadian cousin Natalie. His best celebrity impersonations included Charlotte Rae (a reprisal of his Mrs. Garrett role from The Rerun Show), Dick Cheney, James Lipton, and Richard Simmons. Despite the number of gay and feminine characters Vogt plays, many claim he is not gay. At the end of the tenth season, his contract expired and he left the show along with Ron Pederson and Aries Spears.
