Paul Smith's College

Paul Smith's College is a private college located in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York. Paul Smith's offers both four-year and two-year programs in many fields, including hotel & restaurant management, culinary arts, natural resources, fisheries and wildlife science, forestry, recreation, biology, and business. The college was founded by a bequest of Phelps Smith, son of Paul Smith, who was a 19th century hotel owner. Based on the original hotel's business model, Paul Smith's College specializes in natural sciences and hotel management and culinary arts. Paul Smith was known as a guide and story teller, among many other things, and his wife, Lydia, was behind all the details of the highest class service at the hotel. This background was the basis for Phelps Smith's idea of the college. Along with the money to start a school, Phelps also left more than 20,000 acres (80 km²) of land. Paul Smith's is located northwest of Saranac Lake, New York in the hamlet of Paul Smiths in the Town of Brighton.
