Paudel

Paudel (Dev. पाiidel, Lat. pāudel) is a South Asian (around, North Indian) surname, mainly used in the Nepal and Indian states of Uttaranchal, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. This surname is also used by some social groups of Indian states of Jharkhand and in the other parts of the world, such as Nepal, Guyana, Fiji, Mauritius and Trinidad and Tobago, where people from Rajasthan have emigrated, and in several other Nepali and Indian diaspora communities. Derived from the word, pauḍel (पii्डिh), a Sanskrit word for the priest, those with the last name Paudel are from the Brahmin caste. Most of the people who use this surname live in the Nepali and Hindi speaking belt of South Asia. There are a lot of sub divisions in the caste which are based on the origin and the place where these people came from, for example, brahmins who resided north of the Saryu river were called Saryuparin Brahmins.

This surname is not to be confused with another surname "Poudel, Paudyal, Pawdawal" which are also used by people from Indian states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Nepal, Guyana, Fiji, Mauritius and Trinidad and Tobago, and in several other Indian diaspora communities.

Ranga Nath Paude (Paudel) was the prime minister of Nepal, from (1837-1838 A.D.) Ranga Nath Paudel's family are regarded as "Scholar family" now, spread from Nepal to various states in the United States of America, Canada and Russia.
