Patty melt

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A patty melt is a type of hamburger sandwich consisting of a hamburger patty and cheese between two slices of bread (usually rye, sourdough, or Texas toast.). The sandwich is then grilled so that the cheese melts thoroughly. It commonly includes pieces of sautéed onion, and at some places may include salad dressing.

Despite the simplicity of the patty melt, it seems to be easier to find at sit-down restaurants and independent hamburger places, than at corporate franchisees. This may be because of difficulty ensuring the availability of enough bread of "the proper size" on a continental or global scale, or because grills that can simultaneously support both the high temperature for cooking meat and the low heat for grilling buttered bread are not widely installed.

Despite this, it is a staple part of the Waffle House menu.
