Patrick Kwan began his life as an activist at the age of 12 when he started following his sister in her work against sweatshops, and continued on to labor on behalf of humans, animals, and the environment. He worked for Amnesty International as a Field Organizer, where he noted the strong youth support network. A vegan since 1996, he observed that the animal rights movement had no organization dedicated to mobilizing youths in support of animals, so in 2001 he founded the Student Animal Rights Alliance (SARA), a non-profit group based in New York City designed to fill that hole. In February 2002 he organized the first ever national youth animal rights conference, Liberation Now!, featuring such speakers as Carol Adams and Ingrid Newkirk and designed to be accessible and enjoyable for younger activists. It attracted hundreds of young people from across the country, including many who were not able to attend other national conferences, such as AR2002, for financial reasons. As Executive Director of the organization, he went on to lead SARA through other Liberation Now! conferences, Demand Liberation regional networking meetings, a Grassroots Training Program for fourteen selected youths from across the United States, and a National Training and Lobby Day to help activists become politically involved. Patrick is widely recognized as a leader in the animal rights community. He was presented with the Bill Rosenberg Award, an annual honor for activists under the age of 18 who have made a significant contribution to helping farm animals.
