Patriarch-Cardinal Gabriel Tappouni

Gabriel Tappouni ( Arabic: جبرائيل تبّوني , born as Abdul-Ahad Dawood Tappouni in 1879) was a Patriarch of the Syriac Catholic Church between 1929 and 1968. He was also appointed as a Cardinal to the Pope in 1936.

Cardinal Tappouni was born in Mosul, Iraq.

He was appointed as a Bishop in Mardin in 1912 and he stayed in Diyarbakir in Mardin for 2 years after which World War I started and he was jailed by the Ottoman Turks in Aleppo during an Ottoman campaign to slaughter christians at that time. Many people attempted to interfere and negotiate for his release, including The Austrian Emperor at that time.

After his release, he was appointed as a Bishop in Aleppo by Patriarch Rahmani.

in 1929, Patriarch Rahmani died, and Gabriel Tappouni was elected as the new Patriarch unanimously.
